Guess the Smell

It’s 7 am on a Sunday. Time to hit the field for day 2 of a tournament. You are in a hotel that thankfully has a bedroom and an open area meaning there is a room with a door that closes. You remain on the open space side for many reasons.

At 7 am you open the door to bedroom to gain access to the bathroom and poof. You are immediately stopped in your tracks with the smell. The scent of sweaty socks. The aroma of a uniform that baked in the heat the day before. The lingering stench. Oh so awful.

These items are doused with spray to make it another day in the heat wave. On the same body that drenched them with sweat the day before. What will the outcome be at the end of today? Let’s start with a dripping wet uniform and socks that must be immediately removed and placed in a bag to be sealed and put in the trunk for the entire ride home.

You see the car ride is a whole 12 hours from this tournament. The stink must be contained or we may possibly die of the fumes while in motion. Let’s also note this is not just the uniform and socks. I have yet to get to the bag. The bag which was in the car all night that has cleats and turf shoes in it. One pair is new one pair is old. It simply doesn’t matter. Once the shoe is worn once the stink is embossed in the shoe. Another level of nasty. The foot stink of an elite athlete. Is there anything worse?

I thought my brother’s hockey bags were bad as a child. I thought my gym bag was awful growing up but I have met a new level of gross. My child’s sweet nasty funk. The lingering stink that will turn your stomach. The nasty uniform that you must retrieve from that sealed bag to launder. The socks that were new but now look like they have been worn for weeks without washing. Can bleach even help?

At my house we use laundry detergent. We use bleach on the items that can be bleached. We then use a sports powder to soak away the nasty and it does as the water definitely turns black or grey. We trust in Downy to freshen up what it can. We move on. We repeat this numerous times over a 10 week summer season. Over and over again as somebody thought it was a good idea to use the jersey for games as a pinnie in practice two days a week.

That means that poor stinky jersey sits in the nasty gym bag fermenting for two days between the weekend of games in which it is then sealed in a plastic bag. I don’t know how this jersey doesn’t grow mold. This is such a disgusting topic but one I know I’m not alone with.

Stinky shoes. Stinky feet. Stinky jersey. Is there a reward with all the stink? I think not. However, I have the pure joy of watching my child do what they love at an elite level while chasing dreams. When I put that perspective into the mix I undoubtedly say the stink is okay with me. Although I will be fumigating my car and anything in close proximity to the infamous bag or uniform pronto.

No deep breaths today. Lots of mints in my mouth to inhale the scent of mint to get through yet another day. What’s your worst stink story? Can you relate to my stinky experience? Can you smell this post?

RV Life Episode 3

Take me to the land of chocolate.

Oh, Hershey, PA we are here for an extended weekend. Just happened to be Father’s Day weekend. What dad doesn’t like roller coaster fun on their special day?

We hit the road early on a Friday. Travel was smooth as it can be in an RV until we hit some unexpected crosswinds in Virginia. I didn’t even know my car had an alarm for crosswinds. Guess you learn something new everyday. The crosswind experience is one I won’t forget and a great reminder of how important it is to always be alert on the road to avoid tragedies.

Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and eventually Pennsylvania were all states we cruised through on this one Friday. Lucky number seven I suppose. Unloaded in epic time to catch the cool night air at the one and only Hershey Park, PA. An older theme park with the Super Dooper Looper. A blast from my past in the 80’s.

Our destination was nestled in the trees not far from the park. Resort benefits included complimentary shuttle to the park which worked out great. Spots are tucked in nice but I hope many leave before I do as it’s a tight space to work your way out!

The people watching is always amazing when camping. Everything from lounge clothes to pjs mid-day to laundry hanging from ropes on trees to bike riding and scooters going by all while fires are burning and marshmallows are toasting. The sounds of giggles and chatting amongst many different people is always soul refreshing. It’s also nice to see folks cozied up to a fire with blankets first thing in the morning sipping on coffee.

Every stop is always different in the RV. This one had families with little ones, clusters of friends side by side, retirees and so on. We are in and out but always observing. Never staying long enough to get super friendly but just enough to savor the experience.

This site had great shade but not a specific waterfront view like our stops in the past. This destination lacked the views but made up for it in the sweetness. I do mean chocolate life. And for the record I am a dark chocolate type of girl. Thank you Hershey for a unique camping experience.

The photo above is a glimpse of an RV breakfast. Bacon next to a toasted bagel with avocado spread with a hard boiled egg grated over it. Topped with pepper or everything but the bagel seasoning. A good balance for life on the road but super easy to make with a little pre-planning. I do enjoy controlling my menus on the road vs being forced to eat whatever roadside option pops up. I also can’t complain about eating my breakfast in a reclining chair with fresh cool air flowing that requires a blanket when I left a heat wave in Georgia!

Off we go to chase the sunrise on our ride home. Some of the best rides are the ones watching the sun rise in a new place as you head home from your journey away. Sometimes the early am brings a fog then the sun and the colors are always amazing but each rise is ever so unique.

A Peaceful Stroll

Today I took a quiet stroll.

Alone.

My stroll wasn’t preplanned rather it was spontaneous. Off I went. The air was cool and crisp. The shade of the trees added a drop in temperature to 8-10 degrees lower. Unexpected chill but maybe that alerted my senses more.

Hands in pockets watching the trees blow around me. Enjoying the scents in the air on this morning. My path wasn’t set. I was just shuffling along. Sometimes on pavement. Sometimes on gravel. I had the option of grass but didn’t drift that way.

On my stroll I thought about many things. I listened to many sounds. I viewed and observed all of what was around me. I genuinely felt thankful for where I am in life. For the good times as well as the bad times. Sometimes taking a back seat to your own life allows you to see your fortune. Not the fortune of money rather the fortune of life and living it. Experience.

I have experience. I can bend and flex and fit into any mix of people or settings. A skill I have worked on all my whole life. Experiences have helped me mature enough to know when I need to bend and flex. When to reframe the gloomy outlook. When to spark creativity.

My mind works in overdrive during the oddest times. Sometimes it’s in a sleep state. Sometimes on a random stroll. The beauty of a quiet mind yields results. I had a recent conversation with a teenage boy. He mentioned how long it takes him to fall asleep. I questioned why. He noted his mind takes time to wind down.

How I related in many ways. In life we all must find a balance for not only us but those closest to us. Kids especially have an always on mentality. Even more so than me. The younger generation is overactive online making it hard to flip the off switch. They are less likely to take the stroll alone I mentioned above. Therefore we should check in on those around us to see how we can help them recharge in non-traditional ways.

Sports or working out of sorts helps as the fatigue will wear one out.

A day at the beach can help. The sun. The sand. The limited reach of electronics. All add a level of fatigue.

An outing such as a hike, bowling, top golf, go-karting, kayaking, and so on. These little outings can provide a change of scenery. A lot of laughter. An escape from the planned days many are accustomed to. Adventures will let the mind settle and possibly add a dream state of what could be next.

Add mindfulness to your day or week. My Apple Watch tells me it’s a thing. Something to remind me to do daily, however I already know this. I am hopeful this post will spur thoughts or action in you or inspire you to influence another.

Practice mindfulness.

Set a goal of peace for yourself.

Challenge yourself to do something different.

Riding your bike to work one day not driving may be just the variation you need. Not all can do this but if you can, try it. See how it goes.

A Colorful Post

I attended a conference recently and I didn’t have the agenda ahead of time. Not my fault just the way the story goes. My first session was an LGBT training that covered a lot of ground. I wasn’t expecting to be fully engulfed in the subject, but I welcomed the learning opportunity. I surprisingly learned a good bit and felt the topic deserved some space on the blog in case others could benefit from the same knowledge.

L is for lesbian.

G is for gay.

B is for bisexual.

T is for transgender.

This is not a judgment post rather it’s an educational post. One to share information without judgment no matter where you come from or how you feel about those in these these categories.

The clip above is small but it’s worth a zoom to read about each category even if it’s just to understand a little more than you already knew about the subject and/or categories.

As noted above I learned a lot about a topic many fear. Too much to include in one post thus I will leave you tidbits that struck me as interesting.

  • Assisted living facilities today are not welcoming for the LGBT community. Many older generations struggle with acceptance thus having same sex partners share a space would be very much out of the ordinary and not welcomed. Just think many elderly today lived through the 80’s in the midst of the aid’s epidemic. That may be their only knowledge on the subject.
  • 1953 Gays were banned from federal jobs. 1973 you couldn’t get fired from federal jobs for being gay (if you even got a job). 1993 Don’t ask Don’t tell hit the military, but ended in 2011. In 2016 the Obama administration ends the ban on transgender in military. Shortly after trump bans transgender again in the military after he became president. Then in 2021 Biden overturned the ban on transgender in the military. So much disapproval within the government. So much confusion. I’m not choosing either side I’m merely noting the chaos.
  • Q is for questioning. Those questioning if they are gay, bisexual, etc. I feel like I’ve lived under a rock for not understanding the depth of this phase for many individuals in varying age groups. So many variables such as religious beliefs, family dynamic, social norms, and so on.
  • I also didn’t realize how many young people become homeless because of the disapproval they receive when they come out about their sexual preference. Some are even forced into Survival sex to stay alive. This was probably the most saddening for me as it involved suffering of young people. However on the flip side I learned of that some incarcerated people choose to partake in survival sex in exchange for protection while in prison. However once out of prison society doesn’t recognize those same people as gay, rather its more accepted due to environmental conditions Liek an all male prison and the need to survive. What an irony in my mind. A child can be forced into survival sex yet a prisoner faces less judgment for similar choice.
  • if I go any further I would be too long winded on a controversial subject. I would however encourage you to read up on the history of LGBT since 1980. You will learn more than you want to on aids. You may see some interesting videos. You might even think about how you don’t agree with people who choose to be vegan or vegetarian but you don’t deny them food. In the same contrast we shouldn’t let those in the LGBT fear society because they choose to live a certain way.
  • just a good food thought post. Life is a journey. Life’s journey is full of lived experiences. Today I lived through the lens of another who is in the LGBT community to foster growth in myself. I can only encourage others to expand their knowledge on the subject.

no sides taken from me ont his subject as I am neutral. I will always choose to love others for who they are not what they practice behind closed doors.

Feel free to post comments or feedback but know we won’t share hate messages rather we will just have awareness on how our audience views our post ont his controversial subject.

RV Life Episode 2

June has arrived and the RV is ready for its next road trip, or is it? That’s really the big question. The RV has been in the shop for some minor maintenance but thanks to parts delays it just got back in time for the trip but really not fully tested.

First stop was the gas station. A burning smell. What the heck? This is a 2022 model what could be burning? Well the air conditioner in the cab was blowing hot air and a decision was made to go air free for the first few hours while we traveled to our destination since the RV shops were not open yet. I was thinking this was risky but pressed on. I was also think and RV may be worse than a boat as far as what could go wrong.

4 hours later the air worked and the smell was no more. No explanation. Just chalked this one up to weirdness on the road. The RV held up for the 12 hour trip. 3 stops for gas and guess what diesel prices are up over $1.00 per gallon since the last trip. Guess the piggy bank funds go to gas this summer.

As we rolled into our destination, the newness set in. This RV resort was aged compared to the last trip when the resort was brand new. Also note a resort RV destination is different from a RV campground when it come to frills in the amenities area. The cement pads were bumpy and the power and sewer hookups were older. Old doesn’t mean bad, just a different experience. The first challenge was leveling the RV. The auto leveler wasn’t working due to a slope issue. Then the hydraulics failed on one leg. That means a trip to Home Depot before it closes.

I think the candle above is missing a line. New problems expected. I suppose each trip will come with challenges thus having a positive mindset and a tool box is required. A jack was purchased to balance the one side where the leg did not extend. Something that shouldn’t happen on a new RV but it did. Lesson learned to be prepared and brace for any unexpected challenge. Pack the tools. Make sure you have the internet to google fixes and so on.

Sunrise and sunset were absolutely beautiful at this waterfront site. The cranes visited the waterfront multiple times in the morning. Listening to the sounds and watching their actions were an experience in itself. Many folks took up fishing on the bay. Noting big catches of catfish. I didn’t fish but enjoyed being a spectator. There was a family of ducks nearby as well. It was cute to watch them in and out of the water. A little clan.

Had some farm fresh ice cream from a local dairy down the road as well. A sweet treat I won’t complain about even if my waist line might not be as appreciative. Great sleep. Fresh air. Many memories were made. The next voyage is around the corner. I’m sure we will limp along to that site since there is no time to put the RV in shop.

Wish me luck as I travel the states this summer. Many destinations are on the horizon. Not sure how many I’ll write about, but it’s my hopes that I will be inspired to share my travel stories with you in the weeks and months ahead.

RV destination one was Biloxi, Mississippi and RV destination two was Baltimore, Maryland. Both city and state had the irony of the same initials. Odd footnote that wasn’t planned. Just a random fact as the step stop is Hershey, Pennsylvania.
